Representative Tulsi Gabbard, an outspoken Democrat from Hawaii, was asked on Dec. 22 by Jake Tapper of CNN what she thought of Hillary Clinton's statement that "we are where we want to be in our fight against ISIS."
In her reply, she once again called for an end to the "counter-productive, illegal war" against Syrian President Bashir Assad, and then zeroed in on how utterly dangerous it would be for the U.S. to establish a no-fly zone over Syria, which Hillary Clinton, among others, advocates.
"I don't see how your head can be screwed on straight if you're pushing for a no fly zone" when there are presidential candidates "saying that they would shoot down Russian planes if it entered that area, kicking off a U.S.-Russia war, an escalation to a world war, or a nuclear war."
Gabbard, who served as a military officer in combat, unlike the vast majority of her fellow Congressmen, used the chance to underline a basic precept in war.
"This is something which points to a very important issue, which is that our political leaders are not operating with a military mindset. This is something which I, and other young officers learned very early on in the military: ... before you go out and execute a military action, you have to look at the consequences."
How will your enemy and other factors react to that action? And once they react, how will you react, what will your response be to that, and so on.
"If you look at what's happening in the Middle East now, the mess that we are in today, can be pointed directly -- starting with the Bush administration, and continuing to today -- with that lack of military mind-set. That lack of foresight, whether you are talking about overthrowing Saddam in Iraq, Gaddafi in Libya, the Arab Spring, Mubarak in Egypt, and now Assad in Syria."
Tapper asked Gabbard if she agreed with President Obama's statement that the biggest problems in fighting ISIS are the administration not communicating its strategy well and that the media is over-covering the terrorist attacks.
"I respectfully but completely disagree. This is not a so-called communication problem." Corrections must be made so that we are actually focusing on defeating and destroying our enemy of ISIS, Al Qaeda and other Islamic extremist groups.
"It makes no sense, how on the one hand we are waging war to overthrow the goverment of Assad, which is exactly what ISIS wants... and on the other hand say we are destroying ISIS. You can't be doing two things at the same time that are completely opposed to each other."
