Obama Sells Himself as the "Killer President"
In 1980, Ronald Reagan defeated incumbent President Carter by asking voters, “Are you better off than you were four years ago?” Since those four years were characterized by high inflation, and low growth, the obvious answer was “No,” and the hapless Carter had no reply.
In 2012, the very unoriginal Mitt Romney is asking the same question, knowing that, despite President Obama's claims that a slow, steady recovery is taking place, most voters have suffered from severe economic losses and hardship since 2008, and the answer would again be an emphatic “No.”
The Obama campaign has been forced to acknowledge that “recovery” has been slow, but blames it on former President Bush – even though Obama has continued the worst part of Bush's economic policies, the bank bailout – and on the “Republican-controlled” Congress, although Democrats controlled both Houses of Congress during Obama's first two years in office.
Yet Herbert Hooveresque claims, repeated by Obama and many surrogates at the Democratic Party National Convention, that “good times are ahead, just give us more time,” were smashed, with the release of new economic reports showing that not only have no new net jobs been created in the last nine months, but that more Americans than ever depend on government programs to eat! The latest U.S. Department of Agriculture survey on hunger shows that one in six Americans faced hunger in 2011, and that nine million children live in “food-insecure” households. Additionally, a record 46 million Americans now rely on food stamps to afford food!
The difficulty in making an economic argument for Obama's re-election therefore is limited to insisting that Romney's policies would be more catastrophic. While it is true that Romney has thus far offered nothing to address the accelerating disintegration of the financial/economic system, between 55 and 65% of likely voters tell pollsters they do not trust Obama, when it comes to the economy.
It is not surprising, then, that Obama's team has decided to run based on the image of Obama the Killer-in-chief, with a special emphasis on, “He got Osama bin Laden.” One commentator remarked that the name “bin Laden” was spoken so much at the convention, it was as though he were Obama's running mate!
This was punctuated by Sen. John Kerry's macho answer to Romney's question, when he mockingly said, “Ask Osama bin Laden if he is better off now than he was four years ago.” And Vice-President Biden joined in with the bumper sticker slogan, “Bin Laden Is Dead, General Motors Is Alive,” a reference to the bailout of GM (which will likely need another injection next year!).
That Obama intends to run as the “killer President” was evident in his interview with CNN during the convention, in which he defended the “criteria” he uses when launching deadly drone strikes. Ignoring the fact that there is no constitutional, or legal provision, allowing a President to order targeted assassinations, he claimed he decides who will be killed under authorization of U.S. law! He added that those targeted must represent a threat that is “serious and not speculative,” skirting around the reality that his Administration has presented not a shred of evidence against those already killed. Nor did he have anything to say about the hundreds, if not thousands, of civilians killed by drones, under his orders, in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Yemen.
While it is impossible to have exact figures, experts estimate that ten times more civilians have been killed by drone, than suspected (but only suspected) terrorists. Moreover, Obama and his Justice Department have refused to prosecute any of the Americans involved in the notorious torture cases of Bush-Cheney era, and have just shut down the remaining investigations.
With all of this, many Democrats left Charlotte very uneasy about the man they had just nominated, who has revealed himself to be a cold-blooded killer. The question remains whether they will campaign for him energetically over the next two months.
