A Trip Wire to World War
Between the financial collapse of the trans-Atlantic region and the danger of a world war starting from the Middle East, the overall strategic situation has never been as tense as now. In fact, the very existence of human civilization is at stake, as Helga Zepp-LaRouche underscored in a recent article, but there does exist an alternative which can and must be implemented immediately.
The acute danger comes from those who think the empire's financial system can only be saved through ever more “quantitative easing”, i.e. hyperinflation and brutal austerity for the population, and through provoking ever more new wars and conflicts.
In that context, the situation throughout the Middle East looks more and more like the Balkans on the eve of World War I, when unwitting local figures were moved around the chessboard by the imperial chess players, and one shot was literally enough to set off a world war. Just so today, the complex alliances, arms deals and power games in the Middle East are only elements of an overall war dynamic, fueled by political tools such as President Obama, Prime Minister Cameron and Tony Blair, and François Hollande, and ultimately aimed against Russia and China.
In the case of Syria, they have openly taken the pretext of chemical weapons to threaten direct military action, while British and American special forces work with the extremist Saudi and Qatari financed Salafists, al-Qaeda and the PKK to topple Bashar al Assad. Likewise, there is talk of creating a “humanitarian safe zone” inside Syria or even a no-fly zone over the country, both of which are unworkable.
Saner voices, however, in particular among military leaders, are working overtime to prevent any such actions. The most important among them is U.S. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Martin Dempsey. While in London on Aug. 30 for the Paralympics, he made his strongest public comments yet, clearly disavowing Obama's policy. In fact, the Independent headlined: “Obama Wrong over Syria Action, Says Top General”. Any no-fly zone, he pointed out, would require that NATO actually enforce it and any “broader activities” inside Syria would have to be discussed within NATO, and not done by individual countries.
The worst-case scenario, in his view, would be a failed state in Syria, meaning the takeover of the jihadists and al-Qaeda forces whom the U.S., the UK and France are now supporting.
General Dempsey also took the occasion of his trip to London, where he had discussions with British military leaders, to strongly advise Israel not to strike Iran, just at the time that Prime Minister Netanyahu is beating the drum for intervention. Dempsey again repeated that Israeli strikes might delay Iran's nuclear program but not destroy it, adding that sanctions were more effective.
In both cases, Syria and Iran, the chairman of the United States Joint Chiefs of Staff has clearly taken his distance with the confrontation course against Russia and China pursued by the White House.
So has his one of his predecessors, retired General Colin Powell, and even more bluntly so. In an Aug. 26 interview on CNN, Powell, who was Secretary of State when George W. Bush launched the invasion of Iraq and later regretted it deeply, warned against a no-fly zone and any military action in Syria or in Iran, stating the key to the latter's nuclear issue is to engage Tehran in talks, as its leaders are “rational”. Very importantly, Powell insisted that Russia is not “a geostrategic foe”, and is not going to be one, thus endorsing the intense efforts of various American and Russian military leaders to work out a war avoidance policy.
As Helga Zepp-LaRouche wrote in her Aug. 31 article, the arsenal of military capabilities, including thermonuclear, now stationed in and around the Middle East region is far more than enough to wipe out the entire human race. And clearly, any confrontation with Russia and China over Syria and Iran today would lead to the use of thermonuclear weapons.
Therefore it is of the utmost urgency that those who understand the danger act immediately, including by mass mobilizations and supporting the LaRouche alternative.
