French Presidential Campaign: Jacques Cheminade Rocks French Political Scene... Again!
Jacques Cheminade opened a crucial flank in the overall strategic situation on Jan. 31, when he announced that over 500 mayors had pledged to "sponsor" his candidacy for President. The news was announced during a ten minute interview on RMC at 7 am and then swept through the major media within hours.
At 3 pm on the same day, Cheminade held a press conference to present his program, now in book form, titled A World without the City of London and Wall Street.
The effect was that of a bombshell, especially since many other well-known political figures – former ministers Dominique de Villepin, Hervé Morin, Jean-Pierre Chévènement, Christine Boutin, etc. and even Front National candidate Marine Le Pen – are either complaining that the mayors won't sign for them, or have already dropped out of the race.
To be certified as a Presidential candidate in France, at least 500 elected officials must sign an official form stating that they "sponsor" that person, and thus want him to participate in the campaign.
In the 24 hours after Cheminade made known that he had firm commitments from over 500 mayors, major television networks called in to set up interviews with him. While initial coverage was quite straightforward, the attack dogs in the media are ready to pounce on command.
What everyone wants to know is how he managed to convince the mayors to commit themselves. On the Jan. 31 "Grand Journal" news program on Canal Plus TV, Cheminade reminded the journalists that when he was running in the 1995 election, he was already warning how serious the financial crisis was. Today, he said, the mayors as well as the rest of the country are looking for new leaders, who respond to the silent anger inside the nation.
Cheminade has also explained that he has a dynamic team of young people working with him, who have real ideas and are determined to put them through.
While all kinds of wild labels have been stuck on Cheminade, he simply said he was a "left Gaullist" or what used to be known in France as the "old left", made up of people who had the guts to defend scientific progress as the foundation for social justice.
