New U.S. Ambassador to Moscow Goes for Regime Change

Habitually, an ambassador is a career diplomat, assigned to a specific country in order to represent his own country, avoiding interfering in the internal affairs of the host country. Not so with Michael McFaul, Barack Obama's new appointee to Moscow, who is openly promoting regime change for the Russian Federation.

On Jan. 17, the new Ambassador presented his credentials to the Russian government. On the very next day, he invited opposition figures, including leaders of the December street demonstrations, as his first guests to the embassy.

This insult drew a quick response from Russian state TV, which immediately unmasked McFaul. "The fact is that McFaul is not an expert on Russia. He is a specialist in promotion of a particular type of democracy pure and simple." In fact, McFaul has been leading efforts to destabilize Russia since the early 1990s, when he headed the National Democratic Institute office in Moscow.

He has already written much against Prime Minister and Presidential candidate Vladimir Putin, including the 2001 book Russia's Unfinished Revolution. The TV report by Mikhail Leontyev posed the question: "Has Mr. McFaul arrived in Russia to work on his specialty? That is, to finish the revolution?" In 2006, he was an editor of the book Revolution in Orange.

McFaul himself summed up his own view of his job in a recent interview, quoted by Leontyev, in which he said: "Most specialists on Russia are diplomats, or specialists on security and arms control. Or Russian culture. I am neither. I can't recite Pushkin by heart. I am a specialist in democracy, anti-dictatorial movements, and revolutions."

This un-diplomatic appointment has created a huge stir in Russia. One long-time Russian civil rights activist sent in a question to Lyndon LaRouche's Jan. 18 webcast, expressing his anger. To which LaRouche replied that McFaul's political pedigree is totally British, not American. "This is a foul ball, put into office as a diplomat now, by a foul ball called the President of the United States."

Former Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov sent an adequate signal to the more sane elements in the institutions of the U.S. Presidency, by proposing that McFaul concentrate on strengthening the bilateral relations, including in the development of the Arctic (cf. U.S.-Russian Cooperation in the Arctic Promoted by Senior Russian Figure).

As an aside, the outrageous shift in U.S. diplomacy was also on display from China, where U.S. Ambassador Gary Locke stated on Jan. 19, in an interview with National Public Radio, that the Chinese government's situation is “very delicate”, very unstable, because of popular protests, and that the human rights record has worsened across the board.
