Troika's Medicine: Suicides Up 22.5% in Last Three Years, Medicines Becoming Scarce
Newly released statistics from the Greek police statistics show that 1,727 people committed suicide between 2009 and 2011, 507 in 2009, 622 in 2010, 598 last year).The number of attempted suicides has also risen.
Prior to the crisis, Greece had one of the lowest suicide rates in Europe at 2.8 per 100,000 inhabitants, and now it has the highest. Furthermore, many suicides are not reported, for religious reasons, making the reported statistics lower than the reality.
According to Bloomberg, Greece has been all but red-lined by international pharmaceutical producers because of the financial collapse. Pharmacies are unable to purchase life-saving medications such as Sanofi's blood-thinner Clexane and GlaxoSmithKline PLC's corticosteroid asthma inhaler Flixotide. The Pan-Hellenic Association of Pharmacists reports shortages of almost half the country's 500 most-used medicines. Pharmacists also have to pay cash up front when ordering for patients, who are, in turn, now asked to first pay cash and then seek reimbursement from the insurance companies.
That is because the public social funds owe no less than EU330 million in overdue reimbursements to pharmacies, because of the government's austerity policies. Those patients who can't pay the medicine have to go without. Most medications are imported, and since the government has cut the amount it is willing to pay, foreign pharmaceutical companies have stopped selling to Greece.
At the same time, Greece's unemployment rate jumped to 18.2% in October, up from 17.5% in September and 13.5% a year earlier, according to data released by the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTA).
