After the wages for public sector workers were brutally slashed by 20% at the demand of the infamous Troika, the same European Commission, ECB and IMF are now demanding severe cuts for private sector workers as well – although official figures show that over 20% of the population now live below the poverty line.
On Jan. 4, Greek Prime Minister Lucas Papademos, the EU's strongman, indicated to a group of entrepreneurs and unions that collective bargaining agreements would have to be renegotiated. On the chopping block are not only salaries, but also a reduction of the minimum wage, which is already at the poverty level of EU750 a month, and of the 13th and 14th month wages, which constitute 15% of wages, as well as scrapping automatic raises.
Papademos was speaking before leaders of the private sector union GSEE, the Hellenic Federation of Enterprises, the National Confederation of Greek Commerce, and the General Confederation of Greek Small Businesses and Traders. The union said it would not accept any such agreement, and employers are also reticent to do so.
But, as Papademos – himself former governor of the Bank of Greece and a former vice président of the European Central Bank – insisted, the blackmail is that Greece will not receive the next bailout funds, if the deal doesn't go through.
The tragedy, of course, is that none of these cuts will ever suffice to pay off the fast growing debt. The real economy has already shrunk by at least one quarter since the beginning of the crisis, and the Greek Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) revealed, on the same day as Papademos' dictate, that at least 20.1% of the Greek population was living in poverty in 2010. In 2011, of course, the cuts in living standards were even more brutal.
“Without an agreement with the Troika and the ensuing funding, Greece faces the threat of a disorderly default in March,” Papademos warned at the same event.
The alternative to that, in our view, is for Greece to get out of the Eurozone now, which is certainly preferable to killing off its population. That view is no longer a tabou, according to Thomas Mayer, chief economist of Deutsche Bank. In an interview with the Dec. 25 FAZ, he noted there was a good chance that the new government coming out of the 2012 parliamentary elections could be unwilling or unable to carry out the drastic austerity program. the Greeks would then be forced to quit the euro, and print their own money.
