Rogozin: NATO Still Aims to "Keep Russias out and the Germans Down"
Dmitry Rogozin's appointment as Deputy Prime Minister has prompted the wide circulation in the Russian Internet of the video of a speech he gave in November to Aerospace Forces in the restricted city of Krasnoznamensk. Reflecting on his recent negotiations with NATO on anti-missile defense deployments in Europe, Rogozin said that "NATO continues to live by the principles set down by NATO Secretary General Lord Ismay: `To keep the Russians out, the Americans in, and the Germans down.' ... They understand that the Germans may always develop into a force that will consolidate Europe around itself."
He also charged that NATO was exploiting its new, East European members like Romania, where the anti-missile systems will be based. "We have scrutinized the agreement the Americans have signed with the Romanians," he said. "The Romanians may think they are important interception missile operators, but even the base commander, a Romanian serviceman, has the right to enter only the lobby." Rogozin added the Europeans have become "hostages and targets of a retaliatory attack."
