NATO's Secret War in Syria and Propaganda
CIA analysts are highly skeptical of the claims widely circulated in Western media about the situation in Syria, according to former CIA officer Philip Giraldi. In particular, they refuse to sign off on claims made in the UN report that more than 3,500 civilians have been killed by Syrian soldiers. Likewise, accounts of mass defections from the Syrian Army and pitched battles between deserters and loyal troops appear to be fabrications which cannot be independently confirmed, Giraldi wrote in The American Conservative of Dec. 19. On the other hand, the analysts consider it "more true than false" that the Syrian government is being attacked by rebels who are armed, trained, and financed by foreign governments.
In fact, many reports confirm that British, French, and U.S. forces are arming and training the so-called rebel forces, including by acting through Turkey, and armed forces from Libya have been flown in, some say by NATO.
The propaganda put out by the Syrian opposition has also been seriously questioned by Stratfor, a main-stream strategic intelligence group based in Texas. In a mid-December report, the group states that "most of the opposition's more serious claims have turned out to be grossly exaggerated or simply untrue, thereby revealing more about the opposition's weaknesses than the level of instability inside the Syrian regime." The article then goes on to suggest that any suggestions of massacres are unlikely, because the Syrian "regime has calibrated its crackdowns to avoid just such a scenario," in order to avoid "the high casualty numbers that could lead to an intervention based on humanitarian grounds."
In fact, all media accounts on the number of people the Assad regime supposedly kills every day come from one single source – the "London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights". Even the UN Human Rights Commission relies on them. And who provides that "Observatory" with the figures? The "Strategic Research and Communications Center," also based in London, and headed by Syrian-born Ausama Monajed.
Monajed lives in exile in the UK, where he is apparently well-protected by British intelligence. Besides being a founding member and spokesman of the Syrian National Council, the group that is urging the Arab League to remove al-Assad, he is also a member of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
According to one report, he works with others based in France, Lebanon, and Qatar, the latter being a cat's paw for Riyadh and London, which has now just adopted Wahhabism as its national religion. And he is a darling of the U.S.-based Project Democracy.
