Prof. Boyle: "U.S. Threats of Nuclear War against Iran Are a Criminal Act"

Professor Francis Boyle of the University of Illinois is an outspoken opponent of U.S. foreign policy, as well as of Barack Obama's drive for a "unitary executive." As an expert in international and constitutional law, he has repeatedly denounced the illegality of the U.S. war policy since at least the first Iraq war.

In an interview with LPAC TV on Oct. 29, he warned that if the Obama Administration moves against Syria, and then Iran, that would detonate an explosion leading to planetary war.

Interestingly, the Iranian national television Press TV published on Dec. 24 a report on a speech which Prof. Boyle had made at a conference on nuclear deterrence held in Feldkirch, Austria, on Sept. 4 2010. The arguments he makes are even more striking today, than at that time.

He stressed, for example, that when officials of the Obama Administration say "all options are on the table," in respect to Iran, what they mean is in fact a nuclear war, and that is explicitly prohibited by international law.

He also said, according to Press TV, that "the U.S. government is threatening to attack Iran 'under the completely bogus pretext' that it might have a nuclear weapon."

Further quotes from the Iranian TV station: "He added that as the sole global authority to monitor nuclear activities, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has already refuted charges against Iran as 'simply not true.' The legal expert stated that Article 2 of the UN Charter 'prohibits both the threat and the use of force except in cases of legitimate self-defense' and the U.S. wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Pakistan, 'do not qualify under that definition.'

"The professor also said that nuclear weapons and 'nuclear deterrence' have 'never been legitimate instruments of state policy, but have always constituted instrumentalities of internationally lawless and criminal behavior.' Boyle noted that the former U.S. President George W. Bush's doctrine of preventive warfare, which has not been officially repealed by Obama, was in fact, concocted by the Nazi lawyers for the Nazi defendants at Nuremberg and was rejected at that court.

"'If we don't act now, Obama and his people could very well set off a Third World War over Iran that has been already threatened publicly by (the former President George W.) Bush Jr.,' he asserted. The professor noted that the U.S. today is engaged in 'ongoing international criminal activity' for 'planning, preparation, solicitation, and conspiracy to commit crimes against peace, crimes against humanity, war crimes, and genocide.'

"He concluded by saying that the leaders of NATO states which 'go along with U.S. nuclear policies are all accomplices as well.'"
