2012: A Year of War or of Economic and Scientific Progress?

In the year-end period one year ago, the political movement associated with Lyndon LaRouche worldwide launched with renewed urgency a full-scale two-pronged mobilization: a Glass-Steagall type reorganization of the banking system, and great projects to reverse the collapse of the real physical economy, create productive jobs, and spur a scientific Renaissance.

Since then, in spite of growing popular support for those measures, they have not been taken. On the contrary, the hyperinflationary bailouts of the bankrupt trans-Atlantic financial system escalated, as the relevant national parliaments sold out their constituencies. As a result, the LaRouche movement at this year's end has launched an emergency mobilization to stop the escalating drive for a Third World War with leaflets being distributed throughout Europe and the United States, to warn of the thermonuclear war danger, which the mainstream media refuse to report.

Fomenting war, together with crushing austerity, is the oligarchy's standard response to a threatened loss of power. And today, compared to the end of 2010, recognition of the overall financial collapse is widespread. Even IMF Chief Christine Lagarde has warned of a worldwide depression. Likewise, while talk of the split-up of the Eurozone was still considered a taboo 12 months ago by all but the "extremists", it is now increasingly common.

That is the backdrop to the overtly aggressive stance of the Obama Administration and EU countries, be it towards Syria and Iran, or even more ominously, towards Russia and China. The slightest provocation at this point, in any number of hot-spots, could trigger a rapidly expanding conflict, leading to a world war.

Russian leaders remain alarmed at NATO plans to install an anti-missile defense system on the borders to Russia, supposedly to counter any missile attacks launched from Iran. They are convinced that such systems are in fact aimed at Russia's capability to protect its own territory, and NATO refuses to supply contrary assurances.

And while in Israel, many former intelligence and military figures are horrified by the Netanyahu's plans to attack Iran (cf. Israeli Security Chiefs Speak out against a Strike on Iran), President Obama has just gone out of his way to reiterate his full support for Israel and to promote crippling sanctions against Iran. As for the U.S. Congress, it gave Netanyahu 26 standing ovations just a few months ago.

The Obama Administration's policy of provocations is harshly denounced by a number of retired military and intelligence officers, including Colonel Wilkerson, the former chief of staff of Secretary of State Colin Powell.

Those same military leaders mobilized against war are also among those most strongly denouncing the recent National Defense Authorization Act which gives the U.S. military the mandate to detain U.S. citizens indefinitely, without trial (cf. Obama's “Enabling Law” Goes into Effect).

The alternative to this imperial policy proposed by the LaRouche movement worldwide involves putting an end to the oligarchical system and fostering economic and scientific cooperation among nations to boost humanity's ability to meet the challenges of the entire universe.
