London Pushes European Commission
to Forge ahead with Fiscal Fascism

In a meeting with trade union leaders on June 11, European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso rather openly threatened EU countries with military coups and fascism should they fail to push through crushing austerity packages, in order to bail out the banks.

His threats were summarized by John Monks, secretary-general of the European Trades Union Congress (ETUC), in an interview with the EU Observer of June 14: "I had a discussion with Barroso last Friday about what can be done for Greece, Spain, Portugal and the rest and his message was blunt: 'Look, if they do not carry out these austerity packages, these countries could virtually disappear in the way that we know them as democracies. They've got no choice, this is it... He shocked us with an apocalyptic vision of democracies in Europe collapsing because of the state of indebtedness."

Monks himself maintains, on the contrary, that the austerity packages will lead to such a situation. "We're heading back to the 1930s, with the Great Depression and we ended up with militarist dictatorship. I'm not saying we're there yet, but it's potentially very serious, not just economically, but politically as well."

Helga Zepp-LaRouche took apart Barroso's arguments, in a June 18 statement: “The exact opposite is true: if the European governments continue capitulating to the EU dictate and expand the state debt in an inflationary way, and this only to buy out run-down banks, while at the same time brutally lowering the living standard of the poor or unwealthy layers of the population, then indeed an apocalypse is threatening soon — possibly as of July 1, when the European banks have to refinance 442 billion euros [of ECB one-year loans coming mature] or Greece applies for a new rescue package and Spain for its first rescue package.” Zepp-LaRouche pointed to the role of Britain’s Lord Cockfield, who designed the entire euro system when working at the staff of EU Commission President Jacques Delors from 1985 on, as illustrating how the very “European” policies that are slavishly observed by continental Europe, originate in finance-imperialist circles in London (cf. The Euro Monster as Contrived by British Lord Cockfield).

This fact was exposed once again at the EU summit in Brussels, June 17, when the European Commission (EC), in the person of Finance Commissioner Olli Rehn, demanded even deeper and more destructive austerity programs from European governments, essentially acknowledging that each round of cuts the EC demanded, would make the next round worse. Lyndon LaRouche commented that Rehn’s policy is “just automatic hyper-inflation”. The deficit targets imposed by the EC just two months ago are now declared inadequate. “If they continue with this policy, no one will be around for next month.”

Meanwhile, British Prime Minister David Cameron made clear that London is behind the “economic dictatorship” of the Eurozone, although London itself will not join in the arrangement. At a press conference at the same EU summit, he said: “Let me make this very clear; Britain does not intend or agree that any further powers shall pass from Westminster to Brussels; we are not members of the euro. We will always submit our budget first to Parliament. But if the nations which are members of the euro now find, because of this critical situation, that they have to make new governance arrangements [i.e., a fascist EC supergovernment], they will have to proceed and do that.”

LaRouche had this say of Cameron's remarks: “How nice! How sweet... If the people of continental Europe wish to be slaves, they will become slaves.”
