European Commission Makes a Grab for Power of Taxation
The EU Commission called for enlarged powers of governance, when unveiling its new "2020 Agenda" on March3. The EU Tax Commissioner, Algirdas Semeta, is planning a "minimum rate of tax on carbon emissions" across the whole EU "as a priority", he told the European Voice, a publication of the Economist Group.
The idea is to give the EU the power of direct taxation, something which is unconstitutional in most EU member states, because it violates the principle of "no taxation without representation". The German Constitutional Court ruling of June 2009 forbade exactly such actions, by judging EU institutions as lacking democratic legitimacy.
Past attempts to introduce a direct EU taxation have always been defeated, starting with the famous opposition by de Gaulle in 1965. However, emboldened by new prerogatives under the Lisbon Treaty, the EU Junta is prepared to make a new attempt. "In my estimation it is possible to start discussions within the college [of European commissioners]", Semeta said, adding that "there is currently the right momentum" to relaunch the issue. The momentum Semeta refers to, is the EU push for a fascist supranational government.
Hervé Jouanjean, Director General of the European Commission's Budget department, recently told a Brussels audience that the EU was "very close to paralysis" because of the reluctance of stretched national treasuries to give it funding. "We should have a mechanism which would serve to exploit the possibility, in a progressive way, to lead to direct funding of the EU," he said.
Remember that Herman Van Rompuy, the new EU president, had already pushed such an idea at the latest Bilderberg meeting, one week before being appointed. Of course, an EU tax on CO2 would lead directly to higher oil and energy bills, plus price increases due to higher costs for industry.
And what does the Agenda 2020 propose? A 2% annual growth rate, a 75% rate of employment of the active labor force, a 20% reduction in CO2 emissions, a 20% rate of "renewable energies" and a 20% reduction in energy consumption. In otherwords, a blueprint for even greater economic disaster.
