French Government Cuts Solar Energy Subsidies,
Busts Speculative Bubble
The French government announced Jan. 13, that most applications for selling solar energy to EDF, filed since November, would be cancelled. Indeed, after the government had announced that the price would be lower in 2010 than in 2009, the number of applications skyrocketed, from 5,000 per month last summer to 3,000 per day towards the end of the year!
Were all end-of-the-year applications to be accepted, it would cost consumers an extra 2,5 billion euros for their electricity right away, and up to 56 billion euros over the next 20 years. For the past years, EDF has been paying 58 euro cents for each kilowatt-hour of electricity produced by private solar companies, or by individuals who have installed solar panels on their roofs and connected them to the national electricity grid. In contrast, nuclear-produced electricity is only paid 3 euro-cents/kwh.
This created a huge speculative bubble, as some investors were building houses or other buildings with solar panels, that remained totally empty inside, just to sell the electricity produced. Of course, it's the French consumers who have been shouldering the costs, through a special tax on their electricity bill.
