Senate Health Bill Draws Opposition, from Left and Right
Although other individuals and organizations are attacking the Senate bill, none of them so far have identified the truly fascist nature of the measures provided for. The former governor of Alaska Sarah Palin has, to her credit, denounced the IMAB as a “death panel” which is to ration care.
In the House, Democratic Representatives Barbara Lee and Lynn Woolsey, both from California, have launched a drive to have a public option included in the final bill, that is to come out of the conference reconciliating the House and Senate versions, but they are not calling for the Senate bill to be killed. Another Democrat from California, Representative Maxine Waters also attacked the lack of the public option in the Senate bill, saying that this just turns 30 million people over to the insurance companies, and that she could not vote for it.
On the public option, it should be said that although government-sponsored universal coverage would be useful in many circumstances, as long as the primary goal is to cut costs, rather than providing better health care to an increasing number of Americans, it would be meaningless, at best.
“Physicians for a National Health Program”, which advocates a single-payer health care system has called for defeat of the Senate bill, which "would bring more harm than good." They ask the Senate to "defeat the bill currently under debate, and immediately move to consider the single-payer approach - an expanded and improved Medicare-for-All program - which prioritizes the advancement of our nation's health over the enhancement of private, profit-seeking interests."
Likewise, National Nurses United, the nation's largest union and professional organization of registered nurses, finds the Senate bill deeply flawed, as it grants too much power to the giant insurers. And the Progressive Change Campaign Committee accused the Obama administration of having abandoned its original healthcare principles, by dropping the public option.
Even MoveOn.org, the George Soros-funded organization that mobilized to get Barack Obama elected President, is now urging Democrats to block the bill, as it contains no government-run insurance option and no expansion of Medicare. It is circulating a petition saying, "American needs real health care reform - not a massive giveaway to the insurance companies."
