China Launches Fastest and Longest High-Speed Rail in the World
The Chinese Railway inaugurated regular, scheduled train service on the high-speed rail line linking Wuhan in central China and the southern coast city of Guangzhou (formerly, the British Canton), on December 26, 2009. The over 1,000 km journey took under three hours, as compared to 10.5 hours on the old tracks, with the trains traveling at an average speed of 341 km/h. In comparison, average speed of the high-speed railway is 232 km/h in Germany, 243 km/h in Japan, and 277 km/h in France.
Construction on the line linking the industrial and technology capital of central China to the coast began in December 2005, and was completed exactly on schedule, four years later. A remarkable enterprise, considering that 65% of the line goes through tunnels and viaducts. During the trial run on Dec. 9, the train reached a maximum speed of 394 km, making it the fastest in the world.
The Wuhan-Guangzhou line is one element of a huge upgrading of China's rail network, to spur economic growth. In September, officials said they planned to build 42 high-speed lines by 2012, with a total length of 13,000 km, of which 8,000 km will run at an average speed of 350 km/hour. By 2020, plans are to have 16,000 km of tracks, servicing 70% of China's cities, and 90% of its population.
The ambitious plans for rail development had already been approved before the world economic crisis hit in 2008. According to the daily Xinhua, those plans are based on sound principles of physical economy. The high-speed trains not only shorten the distances between cities, but also change the speed of China's economic growth, said Wang Xiaoguang, a professor with the Chinese Academy of Governance. A major problem for the vast nation of China is the wide income gap between its highly developed coastal areas and the lagging interior, he said, and railways will help to spread the wealth. Although concerted efforts have been made over the past 10 years to develop the west and invigorate the central region, they have been hampered by slow and expensive transportation for passengers and cargo. However, "things will change in the future,"Wang said.
A high-speed rail line linking Zhengzhou, capital of central China's Henan Province and Xi'an, the ancient capital in the northwest, will be opened soon.
China has also signed important agreements with Russia for building high-speed rail lines in Russia. And from the United States, GE signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Chinese Rail Ministry on Nov. 18, for the two sides to jointly develop technology to build high-speed rail lines in the U.S.
